RL Vocalic R Story
Earl woke up early on Saturday morning. His hair had a natural curl that stuck up in funny directions. Uncle Earl was coming to visit today, and they were going to the worldwide circus that was in town. Earl watched a bushy squirrel outside his window collecting nuts. The old oak tree had gnarled branches that stretched toward the sky.
When Uncle Earl arrived, he brought a white pearl necklace for Mom’s birthday. The little girl next door came to say hello. She liked to twirl in her new dress to make it spin. Earl’s dog was in a surly mood and didn’t want to play. Uncle Earl could hurl a ball very far when they played catch in the yard. They saw the neighbor unfurl his flag in the morning breeze.
At the circus, Earl watched water swirl in a giant tank where performers swam. A burly man lifted heavy weights that would make most people snarl with effort. Uncle Earl bought swirled ice cream for everyone. Earl saw a shell with a beautiful whorl pattern at the souvenir stand. They watched performers whirl around on trapeze swings. Earl’s mom put curlers in her hair every night, but today it was styled nicely for the circus.
On the way home, they drove through snarled traffic in the whole world of the city. Uncle Earl showed Earl how sailors furl sails on ships when a storm comes. He said he’d carved a wood burl into a bowl as a gift. Earl thought about how the metal knurl on his bike handle helped him grip it. He was glad he wasn’t churlish with his sister that morning when she wanted to come along. As they arrived home, Earl thought this had been the best day in the whole world.
