How to make the “w” sound:

• Round your lips.
• Raise the back portion of their tongue. up towards the top of their mouth, but not all the way to the top.
• Turn on your voice ( voice is the rumbling in your vocal folds.  Have your child/client place their hand on their/your neck during the production of “w” and “s”, and have them feel the difference between the two.  In the production of “s”, there should be no rumble or voicing.  While in the production of “w”, there should be a rumbling or voicing.)
• Breathe out and let the air flow over the back of the tongue and out the mouth.

Tricks and Tips for producing the “w” sound:

• Tell the child to pretend they are blowing out candles to get the lips to round.  Use a mirror or the camera on a phone or tablet, so they can see their lips round.
• Have the child start by saying “oooo” and then right after saying “ahhh”.  It should sound like a monkey!  In between the “oooo” and “ahhh”, a “w” sound should be produced!
• Challenge the child to see who can make the best baby crying noised “wah-wah” or dog “woof”
